Subscription economy

Subscriptions: convenient, yes; but at what price? Do you think the world's slowly going mad when it comes to subscriptions? From music and TV to video games and sports apps, it seems like some form of "all-inclusive." But what does such a "subscription economy" mean, really? And most importantly, is this convenience truly that convenient? What is meant by "subscription economy"?

In simple words, the subscription economy is a kind of business model that provides access to any particular product or services in exchange for a fixed amount on a monthly basis or any recurring basis. You "rent" something instead of paying for it once and for all.

Why so popular?

Convenience: Everything is just a click away, without thinking about renewals or buying new products.

In the world of one-stop content access with a single subscription, the amount of music, movies, series, games, and so on is enormous. You know how much money you'll spend every month; there are no surprises. However, there are some disadvantages.

-Being contractually obliged: once you subscribe to it, it may be difficult to get out of it, more so if you are contractually obliged for a long period of time.

-Hidden costs: Sometimes, companies include in subscriptions additional costs, such as shipping or cancellation fees.

-Technology dependence: More subscriptions implicate more and more dependence on technology devices and online services.

How to choose the right subscription?

Before taking any subscription, it is necessary to make thorough verification of needs and consumption habits. Ask yourself:

-Do I really need it? Sometimes, a subscription may look very attractive but we don't actually use all the services offered.

-How much will I use it? If you're only going to use something once in a while, pay-as-you-go could be cheaper.

-What are the alternatives? Sometimes, it pays to shop around and find out what's on offer from different providers.

Conclusions

The subscription economy surely offers a host of advantages in the way of convenience and access to a large quantity of contents. Still, there are several disadvantages, and one really needs to be very judicious in choosing what subscriptions one subscribes to.
